Unity AD & CEO Matthew Linley to depart in 2018

Unity Theatre Liverpool has today announced that Matthew Linley, the company’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director , is to leave his role in March 2018.

After three years leading the organisation, during which time Matthew has been responsible for a dynamic and ambitious programme which has achieved regional, national and international acclaim as well as a complete upgrade of the theatre’s interior, he is returning to his work as a freelance producer and consultant.

Unity will shortly begin recruitment for a new Artistic Director and Chief Executive to start working with from January 2018 who can continue to develop Unity’s vision and regional, national and international role .

Chris Bliss, chair of Unity Theatre said: ‘Matthew will leave us having overseen a significant amount of change and development and we’re immensely proud of all that he has achieved in his time with us. We know we will miss Matthew’s energy, commitment, fresh thinking and determination. Under Matthew’s tenure we’ve produced the biggest show in our history in Nina – a story about me and Nina Simone, seen our seasonal show with ATT grow from strength to strength and delivered an exciting capital project in Build Unity Better’

Matthew Linley, who was appointed in November 2014, said: ‘It has been a privilege to lead this incredible and vital theatre during a particularly exciting period of its history. I’ve had the joy of working alongside some brilliant and talented people – artists, staff, trustees, funders and partners here in Liverpool and further afield. It’s Unity’s nurturing role for new and often alternative work which I shall particularly miss, as well as this great city. but I’m already looking forward to new creative challenges in my own career as well as watching the further development of Unity.’

Matthew will continue to lead all aspects of the Unity work until December 2017. From January 2018 he will focus on the delivery of the Nina – a story about me and Nina Simone tour across the UK and lead a phased handover to a new leadership team.

From spring 2018 Matthew will be restarting his practice as a freelance producer and consultant alongside developing a series of new programmes with Phrased & Confused (a spoken word producing company) of which he is co-director.

Chris Bliss, chair of Unity added: ‘Having recently secured four years of investment from Arts Council England and completed Build Unity Better this is a really exciting time for Unity as we continue to grow and develop. The opportunity now exists for a new team to take Unity forward and to ensure the organisations ongoing success’.
